What is inside the kit?

Open tab

Ready to grow Mushroom Kits come with everything you need. Inside you will find a block of substrate covered in mushroom mycelium (that's the white stuff), an instruction card and spray bottle. Follow the instructions and be sure to keep your recipe card handy to cook up some delicious mushrooms when they are ready.

What is substrate?

Open tab

Substrate is the organic material your mushrooms grow on. We make our substrate blocks in Brisbane at our farm, using Australian hardwood sawdust with some additional nutrients. The sawdust is recycled from sawmills around Australia. This sawdust would be a waste product, but instead it's growing food!

What's the white stuff?

Open tab

The white stuff covering the sawdust block is mycelium. Mycelium is the living organism that will fruit the mushrooms. We've grown this for you over the last few weeks in a process called incubation. During incubation the mycelium colonises the substrate (sawdust), turning it white and it is now ready to fruit delicious mushrooms.

Can I store the kit until I'm ready to grow it?

Open tab

Keep your kit at a stable room temperature. Don't keep it somewhere it could exceed 30 degrees celcius. We recommend that if you are buying a pink kit to start it when you receive it as they do not store as well as our other kits. If you are looking at storing a kit we recommend selecting a white oyster kit as they can be stored for a couple of months.

Why do I cut an 'X' into the bag?

Open tab

Cutting an 'X' into the bag helps to control humidity, which is a key factor when growing mushrooms. Your grow kit loves high humidity and by cutting an 'X' and spraying within that area, the plastic flaps hold the moisture close to the substrate. This mini micro-climate is perfect for helping mushrooms to fruit.

Where should I put my mushroom kit?

Open tab

Place your grow kit in your kitchen, out of direct sunlight. This will allow you to check on them and remember to spray your grow kit regularly to keep humidity high. Keep it out of wind or away from heaters which can cause it to dry out.

What is the best growing conditions?

Open tab

Check the side of your box for the best growing temperature for the mushroom variety you have. These temperatures are also listed on the product page of each kit. The warmer the temperature the faster the growth. If it is cold, your mushrooms will grow more slowly.

How often do I spray my kit?

Open tab

You don't need to water your mushrooms like a plant. The spray bottle is for creating humidity. Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day. If you can see condensation underneath the plastic flaps of your X cut area this is enough water. Too much water on the surface of the block can cause problems. If it's looking a little dry, increase your frequency of spraying. Continue to mist the air around your mushrooms as they grow to prevent them from drying out.

Is it OK if I miss a day of spraying?

Open tab

This is not ideal but if this can't be avoided as you are going away try and create a mini micro-climate around your grow kit to keep up the humidity. This can involve placing a wet tea towel around the base of the kit or filling a sink with water and placing the kit nearby.

How do I get a second crop of mushrooms?

Open tab

Once you've harvested your first crop, remove any mushroom debris left on the block and let it rest for a week. You may see a second crop start by itself, in that case start from step 2 on your instruction card. If not, remove the bag from the box and float the bag overnight in a bowl of water, cut side down. The next morning drain any excess water out of the bag and wait for pins to emerge and repeat the fruiting process. If you don't want to wait that long you can try cutting an X on the other side of your kit immediately after fruiting your first harvest and grow from the other side.

My mushroom kit has finished what do I do with it now?

Open tab

Once your mushroom kit has finished fruiting and it does not want to produce anymore mushrooms you can remove the substrate from the plastic bag and either put it around your garden or indoor plants as mulch, or place in your compost or worm farm.

How do I know when to harvest my oyster mushrooms?

Open tab

You want to harvest your oyster mushrooms when the caps have just started to flatten out. The edges of the caps will start to go from down-turned to flat. You have to be quick, before you know it the caps will turn upwards to release their spores. If this happens pick immediately as the caps will start to dry out otherwise.

What is the best way to pick my mushrooms?

Open tab

The best way is to pull the mushrooms away from the block from the base of the bunch. Once you have removed them you can then trim off any bits of sawdust underneath. This is better than cutting them off the block with a knife as it will give you a higher chance of a second crop.

How do I store my picked mushrooms?

Open tab

Store your harvested mushrooms in a paper bag in the fridge. Remember mushrooms don't like to sweat so avoid storing them in plastic. Harvested mushrooms are best cooked and eaten within 3-4 days.

Can I eat my mushrooms raw?

Open tab

We highly recommend cooking your mushrooms before eating - they taste much better fried, sautéed or roasted! Need some inspiration? Check out our collection of delicious mushroom recipes.

Can I track my order?

Open tab

Yes. Once your order has been shipped you’ll receive an email with your tracking link so you can stay up to date with where your order is at. Please note DIY Mushroom Mini Farm spawn is sent via regular mail and therefore does not have tracking information.

Why can't you ship to Western Australia?

Open tab

Believe us, it's not personal. We love WA but unfortunately WA doesn't love mushrooms. Due to the biosecurity laws in WA we are unable to ship any mushroom products there. This includes mushroom spawn and DIY Organic Mushroom Mini Farms. Sorry!

Do you ship internationally?

Open tab

At this time we do not offer international shipping. We hope to expand our horizons once we grow a little bigger.

Can I store mushroom spawn until I'm ready to use it?

Open tab

Yes you can. The ideal storage for your mushroom spawn is in the fridge. It can be stored in the fridge for 2-4 months without losing its vigour.

The exception to this is Pink Oyster (Pleurotus djmor) which can not be stored below 10 degrees Celsius or it will perish.

What shipping should I choose for mushroom spawn?

Open tab

Please be aware that mycelium is heat sensitive. If you’re concerned with the possible temperatures of freight for your location please contact us to arrange the best shipping method to ensure your spawn arrives viable and in good condition.

We recommend choosing Express Shipping for grain spawn orders.

Our mushrooms grow on clean hardwood sawdust, not composted manure like traditional button mushrooms.
