Mycelium is extremely sensitive to temperature changes and transport conditions.

And mushroom grain spawn is alive with mushroom mycelium. That’s why we strongly recommend shipping grain spawn via Express Post.

We ship orders Monday to Thursday. We do not dispatch grain spawn on Fridays to avoid it being in transit over weekends due to its heat sensitve nature. Any orders placed on Thursday after 12pm or Friday will be dispatched the following Monday.

Please note this applies to all orders, including Express Post shipments.

Growing details

Species name: Agrocybe aegerita

Pioppinos, also known as Swordbelt mushrooms, are one of the most sought after species with restaurant customers because of their amazing taste and elegant form. These mushrooms grow in tight bunches with long stems and small velvety brown caps.

Light brings out the brown colour in the caps, if grown in the dark the caps will be pale to white.

Pioppinos are tricker to grow than other species because they need very high humidity to initiate pinning.

Pioppinos prefer hardwood sawdust.

For highest yields and heaviest clusters grow on supplemented hardwood sawdust or Masters Mix.

Incubation period: 3 - 4 weeks (depends on substrate).

Incubation temperature: Room temperature between 21 - 24°C. Do not let the substrate temperature exceed 30 °C.

Pinning temperature: 15 - 18°C

Pinning humidity: 95 - 100% relative humidity

Fruiting temperature:

Range: 17 - 21°C
18 - 19°C

Fruiting humidity: 85 - 90% relative humidity

CO2 concentration: 500 - 2000 ppm

Important note: these growing guidelines are drawn from our years of experience as commercial mushroom growers. They are a guide only. We encourage experimentation to discover what works best for your individual conditions.
