Liquid Cultures

A liquid culture is mycelium suspended in a nutrient-rich syrup. Using liquid cultures is a simple technique for inoculating and making your own mushroom grain spawn in bags or jars.

Most Frequently Asked

What is the difference between mushroom liquid culture and mushroom grain spawn?

Mushroom liquid cultures and mushrooms grain spawn are both used for the same reason, to transfer mycelium culture from one material to another. The difference between liquid cultures and grain spawn is that you should not transfer liquid culture straight to a bulk substrate such as sawdust.

Liquid cultures can be used to make your own mushroom grain spawn. By using liquid cultures you can easily inoculate grain to make spawn with less exposure of the sterilised grain to the open air.

This is done by injected the liquid culture into a sterilised grain bag or jar through a self-healing injection port.

How do I use mushroom liquid culture?

The most common use of liquid culture is to inoculate sterilsed grain through a self-healing injection port to make mushroom grain spawn.

To do this, firstly, wipe everything down with an isopropyl alcohol soaked wipe or towel. This includes your hands, the outside of the grain bag (avoid the filter patch), the surface of the injection port, your syringe, the needle packet of the syringe, your bench - everything! This will ensure you don't spread surface contamination to the inside of your grain bag.

Give your syringe a gentle shake to disperse the mycelium or spores.

Remove the syringe cap and place the sterile needle tip onto your syringe. Push the needle through the injection port and inject 10mL of liquid culture onto the grain. Gently move the needle in a circular motion to distribute the liquid across the grain surface.

We don't recommend using an entire syringe in one bag as this adds excessive moisture to the grain which can form pooling liquid in your grain bag. One syringe can inoculate 2 x 2kg bags of sterilised grain.

Gently remove the needle from the injection port. If you are using the same syringe across multiple grain bags, be sure to flame sterilise the needle in between bags.

Once you've injected your liquid mycelium, give the grain bag a gentle shake to distribute the liquid throughout the grain. Then you will need to incubate your grain until the grain is covered with mycelium. Once colonised it is ready to use as mushroom grain spawn.

How long can I store a mushroom liquid culture?

It’s ideal to store your mushroom liquid culture in the fridge. It can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 months without losing its vigour. NOTE! There is one exception to this - Pink Oyster liquid culture (Pleurotus djamor) cannot be stored below 10°C or it will surely perish (sad!).

Will my mushroom liquid culture be OK in the post?

Mycelium is heat sensitive.
