WHAT'S INCLUDED
Making your own grain spawn has never easier!
Our pre-sterilised grain bags allow you to make your own mushroom grain spawn at home without needing a pressure cooker or autoclave to sterilise the grain.
With the convenience of a self-healing silicone injection port you can inoculate the grain with any mushroom species of your choosing using a liquid spore syringe or liquid mycelium culture. No flow cabinet needed!
Each bag contains 2kg of Australian-grown wheat grain sterilised in Little Acre's commercial facility in an industrial autoclave and sealed inside a sterile lab. Sterility is verified using biological indicators and core temperature sensors. The bag features a 0.2 micron filter patch to block airborne contaminants while providing gas exchange.
HOW TO USE
You will require:
- a spore syringe or liquid culture
- a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe/s
- latex or nitrile gloves (recommended)
Inoculation
Firstly, wipe everything down with an isopropyl alcohol soaked wipe or towel. This includes your hands, the outside of the grain bag (avoid the filter patch), the surface of the injection port, your syringe, the needle packet of the syringe, your bench - everything! This will ensure you don't spread surface contamination to the inside of your grain bag.
Give your syringe a gentle shake to disperse the mycelium or spores.
Remove the syringe cap and place the sterile needle tip onto your syringe. Push the needle through the injection port and inject 10mL of liquid culture onto the grain. Gently move the needle in a circular motion to distribute the liquid across the grain surface.
We don't recommend using an entire syringe in one bag as this adds excessive moisture to the grain which can form pooling liquid in your grain bag. One syringe can inoculate 2 x 2kg bags of sterilised grain.
Gently remove the needle from the injection port. If you are using the same syringe across multiple grain bags, be sure to flame sterilise the needle in between bags.
Once you've injected your liquid mycelium, give the grain bag a gentle shake to distribute the liquid throughout the grain.
Colonisation
Allow your grain bag to colonise in a cool location out of direct sunlight. Temperature for incubation should not exceed 24°C or drop below 19°C. Warm temperatures can cause the mycelium to overheat and die and cold temperatures will stall the growth of the mycelium.
After 10 days you should see a good patch of mycelium growing on your grain. Without opening the bag, carefully break up the colonised grain and mix it into the uncolonised grain. This will dramatically speed up the colonisation process. Only do this once, around the 10 day mark.
When the grain is completely coated with mycelium your spawn is ready to use. This may take a couple weeks to a month or more depending on the species and vigor of your culture. Little Acre liquid cultures should take 14-21 days to colonise 2kg of grain if instructions have been correctly followed.
OUR HAPPY GROWERS' PROMISE
It is best practice to wait 7 days after the arrival of your grain bag before inoculating it to ensure the bag hasn't been compromised in transit. Any damage to the seal, filter patch, plastic or injection port may allow airborne contaminants to compromise the sterility of the grain. Rest assured that this product's sterility is 100% guaranteed. If your bag was compromised during transit, we will replace it. Please email us at hello@littleacre.com.au with photos of any damage or contamination as soon as you see it within 7 days of receiving your order.
