Your new mush-roomie is super easy to care for, here's how!
MycoDome is a stylish mushroom terrarium that brings life to your home office decor. Grow your own Reishi mushroom with minimal effort and enjoy the natural beauty of this sculptural fungi. Perfect for plant-lovers, bonsai enthusiasts, home bodies and anyone seeking an almost no-maintenance fungi friend.
Follow the steps below to grow your MycoDome Mushroom Terrarium.
1. SET UP
Remove the lid of the Reishi inner-pot and insert into the ceramic outer-pot. Mist the top of the Reishi medium with 3-4 sprays of water then rest the glass dome on the ceramic pot.
2. WAIT FOR GROWTH
Do not remove the dome for the first 10 days. After 10 days you should see the first signs of Reishi growth on the surface. Once you see signs of growth, remove the glass dome for 1 minute per day to allow fresh air into the dome.
3. DECORATE YOUR DOME
As the Reishi grows in the MycoDome you may want to train the antlers upwards with bonsai wire to sculpt your Reishi. You can also cover the surface with gravel, sand or moss and add accessories to create your micro myco world.
Most Frequently Asked
What growing conditions do I need to provide?
The best thing about the MycoDome is its self-sustaining, no green-thumb required! The Reishi mushroom has a very broad growing range and is suitable for most climates. It will be most happy when kept between 18°C - 35°C. Keep your MycoDome out of direct sunlight.
How often and how much do I need to mist the MycoDome?
The MycoDome Mushroom Terrarium creates its own micro-climate, much like a terrarium for plants. After the initial misting during set up you don’t have to worry about misting it again. If you can see condensation inside the glass dome then it’s working and there is ample humidity for the Reishi mushroom to grow. If you remove the dome for a long period of time your Reishi could dry out so once you’ve given it its daily one-minute breather, be sure to put the dome back on. If you don’t see any moisture inside the dome you can give it a little mist of 1-2 sprays of water.
How long can I store it without growing it?
Your MycoDome kit contains a living organism and it’s keen to grow! Ideally you should begin growing your reishi mushroom as soon as you receive it, but we understand sometimes this isn't possible (if you're giving a as a gift or going away).
Once you receive your package with your MycoDome we recommend setting it up right away. If you need to store it for a little while, store the inner-pot containing the reishi mushroom substrate in the fridge. The reishi substrate can be stored for up to 3 months refrigerated.
Where should I place the MycoDome?
The MycoDome Mushroom Terrarium is a living, breathing piece of nature designed to brighten your workspace or home. You want to be able to watch it growing and changing over its lifetime so make sure you put it somewhere you can see it! Your desk, your coffee table, your bookshelf!
Keep it out of direct sunlight. The reishi mushroom will grow towards light so you can guide its growth within the dome by providing a single light source at the top of the dome or by rotating the pot so that it doesn’t grow all towards the light source.
How long does it take to grow?
You will start to see mushroom growth after approximately 10 days under the dome. Once the antlers of the reishi mushroom start to grow they will continue to grow upwards for the next 6-8 weeks giving you a living sculpture to gaze upon and admire.
My reishi mushroom is growing on the inside of the glass dome, is this normal?
As the reishi grows up into the dome it may run into the glass and start growing across the inside surface of the glass. This is completely normal. The reishi is growing towards the brightest light source. If you want to keep the antlers of the reishi growing upwards, regularly rotate the MycoDome so the reishi needs to re-orientate itself towards the new light direction. You can also add a single source of light by placing the light at the top of the dome or above it if you want to train your reishi upwards away from the sides of the glass. If your reishi mushroom does grow along the glass it will form the shape of the dome which can also be really cool to observe.
What can I do with the Reishi once it's grown?
After 6-8 weeks the reishi mushroom may be hitting the top of the dome. At this point you can choose to harvest it and use it to make a mushroom extract or you can dry it out to preserve your sculpture. To dry the reishi simply place it in a dehydrator set at 60°C for 12 hours or allow it to dry naturally in the sun.
Be sure to remove it from the plastic inner-pot if you are going to dry it in the dehydrator. The substrate will shrink away from the sides of the pot when drying out naturally so you can easily remove it from the inner-pot.
Will it grow more than once?
The reishi mushroom will only grow once in the MycoDome due to the small amount of substrate in the pot. However it is a slow growing mushroom so you will get a couple of months of enjoyment out of it, watching it slowly grow into a beautiful living sculpture.
If you want to grow another reishi use our MycoDome Refill Pot.
